Yes, I’m a glutton for punishment!  So I headed out on Wed. night  to check out the open mic at Gaffney’s Restaurant and Bar in Bethesda, MD.

It just amazes me how many open mics there are in this area, how many people there are at the open mics, and by extension just how vibrant a local music scene there is in the DC metropolitan area.  Holy cow!

As it turns out, tonight was a “changing of the guard” at the Gaffney’s open mic.  The previous host has handed the torch to a new host – and he was awesome!   Tonight had the feel of a jam session as much as that of an open mic.  Yes, we signed up.  But so many of the folks knew eachother well and had played together at other times that they would just hop up there impromptu on eachother’s songs.  It was great!

And the mix of talent was just crazy!  There were folks playing country music, soul music, standards, hard rock, accordian, violin/fiddle duets, and more.  I had to leave about half way through, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.  This open mic allows 4 songs, so I did “Use Me,” “What A Difference A Day Made,” my own “This Ain’t Disney,” and “I Heard It Through The Grapevine.”  And when it was all over, the host asked me to do another!  Psych!   But I just didn’t have a 5th in me tonight.  Hopefully next time.

It’s an intimate space, but that suits the entire mood of this open mic.  It’s friendly, welcoming, inclusive, and just downright fun.  So, yes, I’d recommend folks checking it out.  Tell you what.  You won’t be bored if you’re there for dinner or drinks during the open mic – every Wed. starting at 8 p.m.
